Data Visualisation Aesthetics

For Tiny Tableau Talks, I presented a session on data visualisation aesthetics. The short talk explains how we can use principles from design aesthetics in data visualisation.

I also had the pleasure of expanding on this topic in a talk at EU Dataviz. You can see the webinar version of that below.

The BBC Tableau Style Guide

Working as the lead on Data Visualisation in the BBC Audiences department I created a style guide to be used by the BBC’s internal Tableau developer community, helping them make more consistent, professional and recognisable dashboards.

The style guide also features a template which the teams use whenever they’re starting a new Tableau build. The template allows them to build dashboards that are instantaneously style guide compliant, meaning they get to spend more time on analysis and less time on formatting.

You can read more about the development process over on the BBC’s Data Science Medium page.

You can also see a Tableau Public version of the style guide.

UK Media Landscape

How we use the media is rapidly changing. To understand that I’ve produced a small series of visualisations that looks at those changes.

You can see examples of these on Constantly Plotting.

The Geography of Pub Names

A self-initiated project looking at whether distributions of pub names change across the UK.

The project was done in R to explore small multiples in a map view, allowing for quick comparisons between different themes.
